Inferno Cop: After Anime Report

Inferno Cop

Burning Down Expectations

Series in a Sentence

In a world filled with evil and stacked against him, one cop fights for the sake of justice.

What I liked

So for this section I’m going to dive into specific things I enjoyed about the series but I must preface it again by saying that this series is ABSURD. Like, really absurd. And here’s why. First of all, the characters were wild enough that I was excited each episode to see what was going on. From Mr. Judge being both a hero and an actual judge to a newborn baby becoming some sort of crab monster to Inferno Cop’s grandma that lives in hell, each character just played into the absurdity of the show while making it impossible to predict what was going to happen next. Secondly, the plot. Oh the plot. Essentially, Inferno Cop is a revenge story spanning time and space. Basic? Yes. Entertaining? Wildly so. When I say that the series spans time and space I mean it: At one point Inferno Cop travels to hell, at another point he travels back in time and becomes a pharaoh, etc. Once again, the plot played into the absurdity of the show and elevated it. Finally, and encompassing everything, is the humor. From Inferno Cop speaking a power or weakness into existence to hordes of characters getting mowed down to the most insane plot twists and character reveals (Claudia?), Inferno Cop had me rolling on the ground laughing. The key word to describe the humor is, once again, absurd but hey, I’m a child at heart. As I said in my spoiler-free review, sometimes you just need to embrace that to find

a little piece of happiness.

What I Didn’t Like

Literally there is nothing I didn’t like about this show. Again, then, I have to take the cop out (haha) and say that maybe people won’t like how short and fast paced it is or maybe they won’t like the humor or animation. For me, though, Inferno Cop is a masterpiece in the field it wants to be: Cheap and dumb fun. If you are looking for something deeper then this isn’t for you.

Overall Feelings

In a lot of ways, Inferno Cop’s influence can be seen in a lot of future trigger works. Ninja Slayer has a similar feel, Little Witch Academia incorporates absurd humor and cheaper animation at times, and Kill la Kill blended higher end animation with Inferno-cop levels of style. The series is Trigger almost at its purest: It focuses on the fun that anime should be rather than the expenses or budgets involved. Watch this show if you want to laugh and aren’t afraid to say that you’ve enjoyed a low budget and at times mindless whirlwind. Sometimes cutting back is actually the best way to add value.
