This is going to be really hard to write without spoiling some parts of my review so let me keep this short: Dragon Ball Super: Broly is a triumph of a Dragon Ball movie and one might even say a triumph of an anime movie. Carrying on the tradition of Battle of the Gods and Resurrection: F, this movie is canon to the mainline Dragon Ball universe (being Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball Super) but it succeeds where the other two movies arguably failed: this movie adds to the lore and universe of the series without adding anything new. You could say that calling the other movies failures would be harsh and I’ll admit that that is valid BUT, more than both of those movies, this felt like a Dragon Ball movie. There was no “combine six powers into one” or “training for 3 months/time reset” plot point that the other two movies had, there was just pure and unadulterated Dragon Ball. Watching this movie, I didn’t have to worry about how a new power up messed with the scaling of strength and I didn’t need to wrap my mind around what a new form could do. I was just able to sit back, relax, absorb some surprising lore, and watch some beautifully animated fights. This movie fits a lot into its run but never feels like it is trying too hard. It says a lot about this movie that I called my cousin, a long-time Dragon Ball fan, immediately after I saw it to gush (which is something I didn’t do after the previous two). My spoiler-free and spoiler-filled review will both be posted next week and will go into greater detail but know this: I may sound like a broken record but Dragon Ball Super: Broly is pure fun. See it while you can in theaters, folks, and buy it on blu-ray when it comes out. It was amazing seeing so many people turn out for the film and it's great to see the movie doing so well so let's show them that we want more!
