A very cinematic chapter if that makes sense. The structure and pace to the Wano arc so far has been something we haven’t seen before from Oda and it is glorious.
Part 1: Luffy v Kaido Aftermath
We start off this chapter where we left off last, Luffy is knocked out. Law tries to go grab Luffy and run but is stopped by Hawkins via a sea stone nail. We find out that sea stone originated in Wano and that the craftsmen of Wano are the only ones in the world who have the ability to refine it to such a small degree. This makes Wano even more interesting in the grand scheme of history and its ties to the Void Century. We already know the Kozuki of Wano were the ones to create the poneglyphs, now we are told sea stone originated from here as well. Look forward to more ties with the void century and how the One Piece world is shaped.
Now, this part right here, gave me goosebumps. Kaido is looking at Luffy and says that he’s been glaring at him for a long time, even though he is unconscious. Kaido relates it to Luffy’s fighting spirit, which I believe is connected to conquerors haki. Kaido tells his men to take Luffy to prison and that if they break his spirit, he would make a strong ally. As his subordinates approach Luffy, unconsciously, he lets out kings haki and knocks them out (the Luffy fanboy in me was so hyped). We find out Oden had this ability AAAND Kaido reveals that Kidd ALSO HAS KINGS HAKI. The Kidd slander must stop and everyone needs to put RESPECT on his name. Besides Luffy, he is the only other confirmed super nova to have Kings Haki. The last bit of this first part confirms everyone’s suspicions on Shutenmaru, he is in fact Ashura Douji.
Part 2: Oden Castle Aftermath
We cut back up to Oden Castle to see everyone is safe. Shinobu used her decaying ability on the ground to save everyone. Kiku goes on to tell everyone what happened. We cut to Inu and he finds Tama severely injured, so much so that Oda does not show it. The news about Luffy and his fight with Kaido spread throughout Wano and we see a hilarious montage of some of the Strawhats reacting to it with a derpy “huh?!” face. Robins in particular killed me.
Part 3: Prison
The last portion of this chapter is centered around the prison work camp. There is cell with a certain person that is brought up that probably will introduce someone very powerful. They feed this person one poison filled fish a day and they specifically have to debone the fish before giving it to him. We see Luffy finally arrive into the prison bandaged up looking pissed. He is glaring at all the guards. I love this Luffy. The secret prisoner suddenly hits one of the guard’; necks with a fish bone. Like I said before, this prisoner will play a ig role. He might be one of the 3 samurai Kinnemon was talking about or maybe someone completely different. Luffy then gets thrown into a cell with none other than Kidd. Both are furious at Kaido and the chapter ends with a beautiful “End of Act 1” panel. In traditional Kabuki plays, there are 5 acts. We can look forward to Wano being separated into 5 acts. Love this concept.
Predictions
Luffy and Kidd will have to talk. Somehow they need to break out or be saved. I believe the secret prisoner will play a role in this. We know both of them need to get stronger and maybe the prisoner will be able to help them. There’s a stong suspicion some in the community have that the prisoner might be the legendary Scooper Gaban of the Roger pirates. It would be amazing if it was, ee did see a cover story of a person with a Wano hat with Crocus before so maybe it was a fellow Roger crew mate.
Conclusion
Loved this chapter. Love this 5 act concept Oda is playing with. Love that Luffy was taken to Prison with Kidd. Love the reveal that Kidd has Kings Haki. Just straight up Love.
