Kaido: The strongest creature in the world. Theorizing about Kaido and his powers has been a prominent topic in the One Piece fandom. I’m going to talk about all the different theories I have come across concerning Kaido’s potential powers and what I believe his powers will be.
Kaido the Oni
One of the most talked about theories is that Kaido is either an Oni or ate the mystical zoan Oni fruit. Just by appearance alone, I can see this being plausible. Like the traditional Oni, Kaido is big, wears clothing that resembles an Oni, has horns, and has a club as a weapon. Enhanced strength from a mystical zoan Oni fruit. Thematically, Kaido being an Oni would make a lot of sense for Wano. Wano is based around Japan and its mythology. Having an Oni as the villain of an arc based around Kaido makes sense. Tying in Momonosuke and his situation would add to this as well. Momo is inspired by the Japanese folklore Momotaro. Momotaro was a boy who fought Oni with a gang of animal friends. Sound familiar? Momo is currently in Zou, an island filled with humanoid animals. He has personal issues with Kaido being the catalyst for his father’s death. Tying all this together, it seems very plausible that Kaido could be an Oni or have an Oni devil fruit.
Kaido the Dragon
Another popular theory is that Kaido has a mystical zoan Dragon devil fruit. Having Kaido be a Dragon would also fit the themes of Japan in Wano. The first time we see Kaido, he’s on a sky island. Fans wondered how he got up there and him having an ability that makes him fly was one of the first things people came up with. Again, Momonosuke can be a clue for this theory as well. Momo ate an artificial devil fruit that appeared to be sealed away that made him a dragon. This artificial devil fruit is different than the one’s we came across already. Usually, the artificial zoans can’t turn into the animal completely, but Momo can. I think that the fruit Momo ate was the closest Ceasar got to perfecting the fruit. Another thing that I believe links Momo to Kaido is the scene where Momo has a PTSD moment: as he was attempting to fly, a hand was reaching for him and he got scared. I believe that hand is Kaido’s hand.
Kaido the Freak of Nature
Kaido can possibly not have any devil fruit ability at all. He may be just that powerful naturally. The moniker “strongest creature alive” is what makes me think he isn’t a human. He’s not big enough to be a full blown giant either. Oni may be his species. A very rare and ancient species that may have been taken out. Just pure strength and abnormal durability.
Thoughts
Kaido’s near immortality is a big question the fandom has been speculating. His durability is on another level and borderline God like. We know his hobby is trying to commit suicide. Fans say “so why doesn’t he just drown himself?” I believe there’s something more to Kaido. Either he has no devil fruit ability, somehow has fishmen blood in him, or was able to find out a way to negate the drawbacks of devil fruits. Hs “immortality” is also speculated to derive from the previous owner of the Op Op no mi by performing the immortality surgery. Doffy wanted this done to him. It’s plausible to assume that Doffy found out about this ability through his connection with Kaido. All in all, I do not know what Kaido’s power will be. I can see everything I talked about being his powers. Maybe even a combination of all the things I talked about.
