What I liked
Here I am again reviewing another Studio Trigger series and here I am again telling you all that it’s amazing. As a short form series, each episode is about half of the length as a normal anime episode and, as a result, the show tries to fit a lot into a little. This leads to an extremely chaotic, fast-paced, and fun joyride through a vibrant world steeped in a wide range of animation styles spanning all of Trigger’s works. Without spoiling too much, the show’s plot centers around one main heist and Luluco’s first major crush on a boy but the most joyful parts of the show were those focused on Trigger’s other properties. That’s right, this show uses a Space Patrol to essentially travel from Trigger series to Trigger series and it’s brilliant. Character interactions between the main cast are great, but throwing period-appropriate Trigger characters into the mix makes for an insane spectacle in each short episode. The opening theme reflects this, with a fast paced urgency that feeds right into the energy that the show is going for.
What I Didn’t Like
Rather than a “what I didn’t like” section, I would call this a “viewer beware” section and that is because the one deterrent to this show is the fact that it is so steeped in Trigger lore and easter eggs. Is there a story there besides the references? Of course! However, I found that I enjoyed the show way more having watched the various shows and shorts that it referenced than my friends that hadn’t. And who knows, maybe watching this show without seeing any will pique a viewer’s interest in other Trigger shows? Ultimately, if you are someone that hates missing out on references, maybe hesitate on this show.
Overall Feelings
As a huge Studio Trigger fan, it was like Space Patrol Luluco was made for me. I had watched every show and short it referenced, I was all in on the varying and whacky art style, and the short form format gave me the bite-sized chaotic feel I was looking for in the season. For trigger fans it’s a must-watch and for any fans interested in Studio Trigger it’s a show that’ll, for better or worse, pummel you with previous works. If you’re down for a crazy time, you can’t go wrong with this. Sometimes you just need a short and sweet release.
