Mob Psycho 100
The mind is a powerful weapon.
The Series in a Sentence
Shigeo Kageyama, nicknamed Mob, is a middle schooler with psychic powers that make him an extremely powerful esper but he cages his emotions in order to try and keep them in check, no matter how many dangerous situations he’s put in until his powers burst through the seal.
What I Liked
The design and animation are so focused on the movement of people that it feels fresh. Sure, it doesn’t look like a typical polished anime but the style capitalizes on action so well that any time there’s a fight you’re excited to see the psychic lighting and structure-smashing that comes with it, or in other words, its fluidity is pristine. The pacing of the anime is well-done, working with 12 episodes in order to introduce you to the espers and the world surrounding them, and how they place themselves on the hierarchy of humanity as a result from a family setting to motivations that affect the world at large. Which brings me to the interesting concept of Mob. Without spoiling too much of his character, I can say that his approach to life with psychic powers is a journey to watch. The emotional rollercoaster in the story, which shows his emotional instability through numbers from 0% to 100%, with 100% being his breaking point, shows more of his character each time - with amazing action sequences to boot when his emotions finally break free. At this current installment with the story, the action, characters and
ideals it ended at 1000% for me with a fitting ending for all of the characters that just feels complete and ready to give its audience more. I can almost bet that you’ll be singing the opening theme “99” by MOB CHOIR for days after you finish this anime.
What I Didn’t Like
Honestly...there aren’t many times that I can say that there are very few negatives, but this is one of those times. Keeping it fair for other anime, one note that I can immediately think of is some of the side characters that were introduced early but definitely fell to the side in the face of the much larger esper-focused story. That time almost feels wasted when you get into the meat of the developments later on in the series. In addition, the art style is more “loose” - focusing on movement and action, or gag comedy that is not pretty - when compared to your normal anime animation and I don’t expect that to appeal to everyone.
Overall Feelings
Mob Psycho 100 is a thrill ride that is half-relatable and half-fantasy that shows its audience there is something special about powers and how you use them, with a little bit of everything in the mix - from gag comedy to deep life lessons. The stylistic approach by ONE, the original author of the manga, is closely maintained in the animation with a decent facelift where it really counts for the comedy and action. Personally, this is one of my favorite new anime to come out and I highly recommend that you make some time in your schedule to watch this because you won’t regret it. Fight to become better and better, one day at a time, and you will reach new heights.
